Demonstrating bravery, nobility and loyalty for the sake of one’s country, regardless of the uncertain dangers and perilous consequences - that’s what I took away from reading Alfred Lord Tennyson’s ‘ Charge Of The Light Brigade ’ just now.
Naturally this poem was written in the 1850’s when nobility was rife and the need to risk your neck for your country presented itself daily, what with all the wars and invasions and suchlike.
Nowadays, only taking the straws you actually intend to use from the dispenser at McDonalds is considered to be noble, and demonstrating bravery in the face of uncertainly extends to nothing more than having your first spray tan.
However, there is still one pocket of humanity who holds true the values expressed in Tennyson’s work; a bearded clan with loyalty running through their veins, a sacred oath tattooed along their arms and an amplified mantra ringing in their ears. They are the Rock Generation of yesteryear – the very definition of die-hard fandom, and Planet Rock is their home.
Today I am wearing the second (equally ginormous) T-shirt donated to my THREEHUNDREDANDSIXTEEFIVE challenge by radio station Planet Rock. This is one of many promotional designs they have to appease rock fans up and down the country. Their devotion to their movement is awe inspiring and their fighting spirit is still strong after decades of new age music threatening to destroy all that they've created.
Hang tough placid rockers and in your darkest hour remember, Yours is not to reason why, yours is to Rock or Die.
